With a population of just-under 10,000 people, Bala Cynwyd is a well-established area of approximately three square miles on the lower Main Line. Bala Cynwyd is perhaps most well known as home to many of the area’s radio and television stations. This area of Lower Merion also has a fairly large commercial district at its easternmost point where City Avenue and I-76 (the Schuylkill Expressway) meet, with office buildings, apartments, and condominiums.
It’s proximity to the city of Philadelphia and I-76, and the convenience of two train stations (Bala and Cynwyd on the SEPTA Cynwyd line) make Bala Cynwyd an ideal location for many looking to live on the Main Line and commute to the city.

Bala Cynwyd & Belmont Hills Geography
The southeastern edge of Bala Cynwyd borders the City of Philadelphia. Just across City Avenue lies Wynnefield Heights, where shoppers can find a Target store and several chain restaurants. The Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) runs along the northeastern border, and just beyond that, the Schuylkill River. Portions of Merion Station and Penn Valley border Bala Cynwyd on its western side.
West Laurel Hill Cemetery and the adjacent Westminster Cemetery and comprise a large portion of Bala Cynwyd.
Belmont Hills is a discrete residential section of Bala Cynwyd that lies directly over the Schuylkill River from Manayunk, with the Green Lane Bridge connecting Belmont Hills and Manayunk. Although small in size, Belmont Hills has a pool, library, playground, fire station, elementary school in addition to area residences. This area is known for its hilly terrain.

Middle school students in this community attend either Bala Cynwyd Middle School or Welsh Valley Middle School in Penn Valley, and high school students attend either Lower Merion High School in Ardmore or Harriton High School in Gladwyne. Bala Cynwyd School for Young Children serves children from infancy through kindergarten. This school is located on St. Asaph’s Road, just off of City Avenue.
Bala House Montessori School is located at the corner of Conshohocken State Road and St. Asaph’s Road, just off of City Avenue, in the St. Asaph’s Episcopal Church. This school features a non-denominational Montessori approach to early childhood education for children 2 years and 9 months of age through kindergarten.
The Children’s School at St. John’s cares for children from infancy through kindergarten, and provides before school and afterschool care to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders attending Cynwyd Elementary or Merion Elementary. This school is located on Levering Mill Road at St. John’s Episcopal Church.
French International School of Philadelphia serves children from preschool through 8th grade on two campuses – the Lower School on Highland Avenue and the Upper School on City Avenue. This school offers a dual curriculum in French and English so students master both languages.
Kosloff Torah Academy High School for Girls is an Orthodox Jewish high school for girls. This school is located on the corner of Montgomery Avenue and Bryn Mawr Avenue.
Mesivta High School of Greater Philadelphia is an Orthodox Jewish high school for boys. This school is located on Levering Mill Road just north of where it intersects with Montgomery Avenue.
Bala Cynwyd & Belmont Hills Shopping & Entertainment
The Bala Avenue Business District, situated between Montgomery Avenue and City Avenue, has a number of restaurants, retail stores, and small businesses, as well as a BMW car dealership and the Bala Gym location of Bala Gymnastics.
The Merion-Cynwyd Business District on Montgomery Avenue, where Bala Cynwyd and Merion Station meet at the intersection of Montgomery Avenue and Old Lancaster Avenue, also has a number of retail stores, small businesses, restaurants, hair and nail salons, and a Starbucks.
Bala Cynwyd has additional areas of restaurants and retail stores along City Avenue, particularly in the Bala Cynwyd Shopping Center, home to an Acme, LA Fitness, Michael’s, Carter’s, Corner Bakery Cafe, and Honeygrow, among others.
The Cynwyd Club, a private club on Trevor Lane in Bala Cynwyd, is known on the Main Line for its tennis and squash courts. This members-only club also has a clubhouse, an outdoor saltwater pool, and banquet facilities for large and small events.
The Levering Mill Tribute House is a local event venue for events large and small including weddings, mitzvahs, meetings, and lectures.
Family-Friendly Things to Do in Bala Cynwyd & Belmont Hills
This area has two of Lower Merion’s six public libraries: the Bala Cynwyd Library on the corner of Old Lancaster Road and North Highland Avenue, and the Belmont Hills Library, adjacent to the Belmont Hills pool and playground on Mary Waters Ford road. Like the other Lower Merion libraries, in addition to having a large number of items in circulation, these two libraries have a number of resources and events for children, teenagers, and adults. Belmont Hills is home to one of the township’s two public pools. Like the Ardmore pool, the Belmont Hills Pool offers private swim lessons, space for birthday parties, and free swim for adults and children. Local residents can apply for yearly pool memberships on the township’s website.
McMoran Park in Belmont Hills is adjacent to the Belmont Hills pool and the Belmont Hills library. This park features playing areas for baseball/softball, basketball, soccer, volleyball, and tennis as well as a playground.
Bala Cynwyd Park, across Belmont Avenue from West Laurel Hill Cemetery, contains baseball/softball fields, basketball and tennis courts, and a children’s playground.
Sky Soup Art Center hosts art events and classes for adults and children, including camps and after-school classes for kids and BYOB creative events for adults.
The Cynwyd Heritage Trail is two miles of paved and gravel trail running from the Cynwyd train station through West Laurel Hill Cemetery and Westminster Cemetery, high above I-76 to Manayunk. This area is popular with walkers, joggers, and cyclists. It connects to the larger Schuylkill River Trail System which runs sporadically along the river from Philadelphia 100 miles north to Frackville in Schuylkill County, PA.
Bala Avenue Park is a small playground just off of City Avenue on Bala Avenue. This playground is walkable from the commercial district just north on Bala Avenue.
